Since I rarely spend more than a week at a time in the wilderness, with a little planning this may just work out. If you think of living in a van as similar to living on a sailboat during a week-long sea crossing, then it’s not without modern precedent either. This PDF document is a good source of refrigerator-less food techniques written by some seasoned sailors.
The info they provide seems to match up well with other sources I’ve found online, so the above document makes for a handy summation.
Right now it’s all just theory (the smart have their books). Since I haven’t been boondocking for more than a day since my refrigerator died (my third Whynter dual-zone), I haven’t had the opportunity to test it out. I’m really looking forward to experimenting with this though—to applying theory to Reality just as soon as I get out West (the wise have their scars).
I like to think of Life as one big series of experiments: The point isn’t to succeed (or avoid failure), the point is to grow and become wiser.
